Dads
and Doulas
The doula
does not take the place of the father but compliments and
enhances their experience.
Today, more
fathers are taking an active role in the birth of their child
and sometimes this can feel like a huge responsibility with many
expectations placed on them to be the sole labor authority.
With a doula as
part of the birth team, the father can be involved in any way
he feels comfortable with at any given moment. Doulas will encourage
and support the father and can suggest when to use a particular
comfort measure, or step in to give him a much-needed break.
Having a doula allows
the father to be able to support the mother emotionally while
still enjoying the birth himself... without the pressure of having
to remember everything learned in childbirth class!
Alternatively,
for the father who is naturally comfortable with taking a more
active role, the doula's experience and sensitivity will allow
her to determine where and when she is needed.
In essence, a doula can help the father
find his role with confidence, thus strengthening the bond between
you, and empowering both of you to have the birth you want.
